Foreign Returnees Shun Post-Arrival COVID-19 Test, Some Reject Positive Test Result

As cases of COVID-19 continue to surge in the country, accredited laboratory officials narrate the odds they confront as foreign arrivals routinely shun Federal Government directive on test and safety protocols.
As Nigeria battles second wave of COVID-19 with fears of increase in new cases, officials of some laboratories accredited by the government to carry out COVID-19 test say that many foreign returnees have refused to come for post-arrival test, even after payment and invitation.
The officials also revealed that some of them who came for the test rejected their results when their results returned positive verdict, while others provided false personal details such as wrong phone numbers and email addresses, making it difficult to trace them.
The country may experience difficulties in handling the second wave of the viral infection due to the refusal of people coming into the country to take the post-arrival COVID-19 test.
The Federal Government had recently suspended the passports of 100 in-bound airline passengers who failed to take the second test of COVID-19 after arriving in the country.
Chairman, Presidential Task Force on COVID-19, Mr. Boss Mustapha had disclosed this at the Presidential Taskforce National Briefing last Tuesday, in Abuja.
Mustapha, also, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, had said that the names of the passengers would be published on January1, 2021, while the suspension of the passports would last for six months.
“With effect from January 1, 2021, passports of the first 100 passengers who failed to take their post-arrival polymerase chain reaction test would be published in the national dailies,” the SGF had said.
